Virginia residents will require a Real ID by May of next year to fly anyplace in the United States.
Because of the pandemic, the deadline was repeatedly pushed back. REAL IDs resemble driver’s licenses but feature a star at the top to indicate to TSA that you have a REAL ID. The cards are a type of government-issued identification.
The requirement for REAL ID derives from the Aviation Transportation Security Act, which founded TSA after 9/11 and eventually led to the REAL ID Act, which was passed into law in 2005. This provides a more consistent and secure method for TSA to verify the identities of passengers flying. Each of the 50 states will eventually implement its own Real ID solution that meets federal criteria.
To obtain a REAL ID, you must produce proof that you are legally in the United States and have state residency.
When you go to the DMV to renew your driver’s license, you can acquire a REAL ID. If you don’t have a driver’s license, you can receive a REAL ID identity card instead. It is recommended that you arrange an appointment ahead of time because you must travel to the DMV in person to obtain your REAL ID. You can apply for one online up to 30 days before your appointment, and then bring the necessary documentation to your consultation.
In addition to the usual driver’s license prices, REAL ID-compliant credentials are available for a one-time fee of $10.
According to the DMV, 2.5 million Virginians already have a REAL ID.
