The Washington Commanders are heading into Year 2 of their “Rebuild,” coming off arguably the best rookie season by a quarterback in NFL history. Despite their impressive strides, the season ended in heartbreak, as they suffered a crushing defeat to their NFC East rival the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game. Now, with the 2025 NFL Free Agency period approaching, the franchise faces a pivotal offseason that could define the next phase of their resurgence.
Washington enters free agency with glaring needs across multiple positions, including the offensive line, defensive line, cornerback, linebacker, and skill positions (running back and wide receiver). Addressing these areas will be crucial for sustaining their success and ensuring their young quarterback continues to develop behind a strong supporting cast.
Statistically, Washington put together an impressive campaign, finishing the season ranked 7th in total offense, averaging 363.9 yards per game, and 13th in total defense, allowing 327.9 yards per game. What truly set them apart, however, was their remarkable efficiency on third and fourth downs, which allowed them to sustain drives and produce an average of 28.5 points per game—one of the highest marks in the league.
Looking ahead, the Commanders have a significant advantage entering free agency, boasting the third-highest cap space in the league, per Spotrac. This financial flexibility puts them in prime position to make aggressive moves, whether it be retaining key players, pursuing marquee free agents, or making strategic trades. With a strong foundation already in place and ample resources at their disposal, the 2025 offseason could be the final piece in transforming the Commanders from a promising young team into a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
