Workplace Bullying Affects Millions: A Call for the Workplace Psychological Safety Act
  • PublishedOctober 15, 2024

Workplace bullying is a pressing issue that impacts nearly 48.6 million Americans. Kim Williams, who recently took on the role of chief of HR in a new town, recounted her harrowing experience. “I encountered numerous situations with the chief executive right away,” she said. The environment was fraught with hostility, characterized by “swearing, yelling, and an overwhelming sense of instability.” This created a constant fear of job loss that took a toll on her well-being.

The Impact on Family Life

The repercussions of this hostile work environment extended into her home life, affecting her daughter, Cassi, 16. “When my mom was struggling, I felt isolated and depressed, and my grades began to drop,” Cassi shared. “It felt like a daily battle; I didn’t get a break from it, so I started skipping classes.”

Now attending classes online, Cassi is actively collaborating with staff from two D.C. council members to advance the Workplace Psychological Safety Act. “I want other families to be safe from this. I don’t want anyone else to experience what we did,” she stated firmly.

Advocacy for Change

Inquiries were made to Councilman Robert White and Brianne Nadeau’s team regarding their support for the proposed legislation and whether it will be introduced this session. However, this occurred during Indigenous Peoples’ Day, when D.C. government offices were closed.

Cassi opened up about the emotional strain she endured during this time: “I felt like I couldn’t get out of bed. Sometimes, I wouldn’t eat for days.” This difficult experience has galvanized both Kim and Cassi to advocate for the new legislation.

Legislative Goals

The Workplace Psychological Safety Act aims to empower employees who are targets of bullying by allowing them to sue employers or individuals responsible for their mistreatment. The legislation also permits victims to publicly disclose their cases anonymously. Employers will be required to recognize, monitor, detect, prevent, and adequately address instances of psychological abuse in the workplace.

Cassi, who has also experienced bullying at school, stressed the critical need for such protections: “Everyone deserves a safe environment, whether at work or school.” The push for the Workplace Psychological Safety Act represents a significant step toward fostering safer workplaces across the nation.
