Pamela Thomas, 54, and her 8-year-old son, Rufus, were on their way to her granddaughter’s 14th birthday party when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet and killed two months ago.
Two months later, police in Washington, D.C., announced at a press conference on Friday that they had apprehended the culprit in the fatal shooting.
According to police, officers of their department located the culprit, identified as 22-year-old Dion Lee, on Friday morning. He was apprehended and charged with first-degree murder while armed.
Detectives learned that two people from opposing communities were in the vicinity of Division Avenue Northeast, with one of them shooting at the other. According to police, one of the shots fired at that time wounded Thomas, who was also in the area.
Towards this moment, investigators are still unable to determine who the shooter was aiming his gun at.
According to police, on Feb. 9, officers in the 500 block of Division Avenue Northeast heard gunshots shortly after 3 p.m. and discovered Thomas inside a vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound.
Thomas died in the hospital later that day, and authorities indicated she was not the original target of the shot.
