Baltimore County daycare owner who reportedly shot husband over child molestation accusations pleads guilty to assault and firearms counts

Court documents show that a Baltimore County daycare owner pled guilty to assault and firearms charges on Monday in D.C.

Shanteari Weems is charged with assault with intent to kill, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and other counts for the July 21 shooting and standoff at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in the District.

Weems pleaded guilty to armed aggravated assault outside a residence or business. February 3 is her sentencing.

Weems was also charged with resisting arrest and having a gun during a crime. Sentencing will dismiss those charges.

Her lawyers say she shot her spouse in a hotel room in self-defense. Weems allegedly shot her husband and threatened to hurt herself if police entered the room.

According to court records, the inquiry uncovered two pistols, an informal will, and a notebook documenting Weems’ claimed preparations to shoot her husband.

Former correctional officer Weems owns Owings Mills’ Lil Kidz Kastle Daycare Center. The daycare is under investigation for molesting at least three youngsters.

The July 21 shooting left former Baltimore police officer James Weems hospitalized with several bullet wounds. He was discharged and is now in police custody awaiting trial on various sexual abuse accusations.

His wife’s lawyers have publicly claimed that she confronted her husband about the claims as he advanced near her.

In August, a D.C. magistrate refused bond, calling her a community threat and expressing “grave concern” about her capacity to “make decisions sensibly.”
