Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Win at the Buzzer to Advance in CIAA Tournament
After trailing by 12 points at halftime, the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs came back to take a 48-47 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls following a game winning
After trailing by 12 points at halftime, the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs came back to take a 48-47 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls following a game winning shot in the final seconds by Kyaja Williams. The win is the 100th career coaching victory for Bowie State coach Shadae Swan.
The Bulldogs trailed for nearly the entirety of the first half leading 4-3 in the first two minutes of the game until the Golden Bulls took control ending the first quarter up 15-8. The second quarter was low scoring for both teams with the Golden Bulls outscoring the Bulldogs 6-4 in the period to go into halftime up 21-12.
After both teams broke even in the third quarter making the score 37–28, the fourth quarter saw the Bulldogs begin to gain ground on the Golden Bulls going on a 9-4 run to start the quarter bringing the lead down to four points. Johnson C. Smith would weather the storm going on a run of their own putting them up 10 points bringing the score to 47-37 with 2:10 remaining in the game.
From there, the Bulldogs ended the game on a 11-0 run culminated by the game-winning shot by Kyaja Williams giving the Bulldogs an incredible comeback victory.
Kyaja Williams was once again named Player of the Game finishing with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds along with three steals. Junior Talanya Hutton came off the bench to record 11 points and five rebounds while sophomore Chyna Butler posted 10 points and three steals.
Johnson C. Smith junior Le’Zarea Bowens finished with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds adding three blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs will now look to advance to the CIAA Championship game when they face off against the number one seeded Virginia Union Panthers in the Semifinal round.
