According to a new study looking at “idle and disconnected” youth across the U.S., Washington, D.C. was reported to have more at-risk youth than almost every state in the nation.
The report was released on Wednesday by WalletHub, it cites poverty and homelessness as factors that contributed to its number two ranking. Louisiana is the only state that has more at-risk youth than D.C.
“We have a probably, per capita, the largest investment in ending homelessness among families of any jurisdiction in the country,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser.
“This is what it’s all about, this is an example, you have all of the stakeholders here addressing the issues. We’re going to continue to be here and continue to work with the community to resolve some of the challenges this community faces,” said MPD Assistant Chief Robert Contee.
WalletHub asked experts about how would they address this situation. Some mentioned building relationships with the youth, early intervention and community program.
According to WalletHub, New Jersey effectively address “idle and disconnected youth”, coming in at number 51 on list. Maryland and Virginia were ranked #44 and #45 on the list.
