Maryland’s first cold-related mortality occurs in Baltimore
Baltimore’s first cold-related sickness death of 2022-2023 was reported by the Maryland Department of Health.
A woman “in the 60 to 70 age group” died from a cold-related disease on Friday amid winter respiratory ailment concerns like RSV and COVID-19.
The department advised limiting outside time, protecting extremities, and avoiding chilly temperatures. MDH advised winter heat source caution.
The department advised Marylanders to use heat sources carefully. If improperly built, operated, and maintained, some heating sources can cause fires, electrical injuries, burns, or carbon monoxide poisoning. Install carbon monoxide detectors, check heat sources before use, and never use an oven for home heating.”
Local health departments or 211 can help Marylanders find warming centers.
In 2021, 57 people died from cold-related illnesses. There was no 2021-22 season report.
