DERWOOD, MD – Police in Montgomery County are asking for the public’s help in finding a man who drew a gun on a homeowner, possibly pretending to be a delivery driver. On Monday, Montgomery County Police told FOX 5 they are still investigating whether this was a targeted incident and whether this involves a real UPS driver. Police say the incident happened a little after 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon on the 7200 block of Titonka Way in the Derwood area.
On Friday, one of the victims called police, telling authorities a man dressed as a UPS driver came into the home and hit her mother with a gun. Police say the homeowner told them the suspect knocked on the door wearing clothing similar to those worn by delivery drivers. The suspect was also carrying a box. Then, they apparently pushed their way inside. Once inside, police say the suspect threatened to kill both of the home’s occupants – a mother and adult daughter. The suspect fled afterward.
Doorbell surveillance video shows a home invasion suspect in a UPS uniform running across a yard in Derwood, MD. Ring surveillance video from a neighboring home caught what appears to be the suspect running toward an unmarked white, get-away-van. You see the man exit the home in question, run toward the van and hop into the passenger side of the van, before the vehicle takes off.
Police say the suspect dropped a box he was carrying. Inside, officers recovered a duffel bag. A spokesperson with UPS tells FOX 5 they are aware of the incident. They could not answer questions related to the case but did say there are multiple ways to confirm the person at your door is, in fact, a UPS delivery driver.
A few tips include:
• Know whether you’re supposed to receive a package
• Look for UPS insignia all over the uniform: the shirt, the jacket, the hat
• Look for a computer device in hand to scan the package
• Ask for identification
• Look for the brown UPS delivery truck within sight
