Students in Anne Arundel will return to school before Labor Day
The Board of Education decided to start the new school year on August 28, 2023, and end it on June 13, 2024.
The new calendar will have a three-day break for Thanksgiving, a week for Easter, and closings for other federal and religious holidays, such as Yom Kippur and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The current calendar has 15 half days, but the new calendar will only have 12.
The calendar also has three days for bad weather. It also got rid of three half-days that were set aside for parent-teacher conferences in October and March.
The board met on Wednesday to decide on the calendar. Several board members voted against the calendar because they said families in South County would rather start after Labor Day.
In the end, the board decided that students should be able to leave earlier in June. They said that as summer draws near, students tend to “tune out.”
