From Washington, D.C, currently residing in Norfolk, VA, artist Fat Eric is making waves with his music, confidence, and versatile sound. With exceptional songs like “DNA,” “Intro,” and “Something 2 Prove Remix”, Eric has gained the attention of the metropolitan area and beyond. From his creative musical process, to what he would change about the music industry, we address it all in our TheDMVDaily Exclusive Q&A with Fat Eric.

How did you get into music? What inspired you to start writing?

I’ve been writing music since elementary school. I did not take it seriously until college (Norfolk State University) in 2013.

How has music impacted your life?

For me, everything has stayed the same. Some people may think I got clout, but I’m still the same person.

How would you describe the music you create?

It depends on how I’m feeling. It might be trap, I might want to drop some knowledge or maybe sing. I strive to be skilled in multiple aspects and showcase versatility.

What is your creative process like? How would you construct a song?

Most of the time, I’ll start with a beat. Throughout my daily routine, words and phases will come to me, and I write them down in my phone. As of late, I’ve been using a journal to get my lyrics on paper. Additionally, if I’m in the mood, I’ll freestyle a verse in the studio. I’m trying to find different things that’ll work for me.

Who is one artist you would like to collaborate with?

Money Man. That’s one of my favorite artists right now

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Stay down on your dream and make it happen. Always remember that baby steps are still moving forward.

What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career?

I’d probably be working a 9 to 5 or become more focused on being a businessman. The 9 to 5 life is not for me.

What was your favorite performance?

Norfolk State University Homecoming. I opened up for Fabolous, Shy Glizzy, and Dej Loaf.

If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be?

Rappers will make it and then get locked up and throw their whole career in the trash. Like Kodak, they are going back and forth to jail. You have so much talent and a bright future, and artists keep making bad decisions. I wish my favorite artists paid attention to what they’re doing and not drop the ball.

What’s next for you?

I’m dropping singles, shooting videos, and trying to be more on the scene. STAY TUNED!
