Virginia Gov. Northam signs marijuana decriminalization bill
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed a new bill to decriminalize marijuana by making possession in the Commonwealth of Virginia a $25 offense.
Northam tweeted Sunday that he signed decriminalization legislation approved by the state lawmakers last month.
The new bill makes possession of up to one ounce of Marijuana punishable up to $25 fine with no threat of jail time or criminal record.
I have signed bold new laws to reform criminal justice in Virginia, including measures to raise the felony larceny threshold, permanently eliminate driver’s license suspensions for unpaid court fines and fees, raise the age of juvenile transfer to adult court, and reform parole.

Virginia is the last state in the area to decriminalize Marijuana.
In 2014, Maryland moved to make marijuana possession of 10 grams or less punishable up to $100 for a first offense.
The District legalized possession of up to two ounces of Marijuana in 2015.
Gov. Northam also signed the legislation that makes Election Day a state holiday and raises the age for juveniles to be tried as adults, from 14 to 16.
