Bowie State Bulldogs Football team finish the 2019 season undefeated

The Bowie State Bulldogs football team finished the 2019 season with a perfect 10-0 record after defeating the Elizabeth City State Vikings 60-21. This is the first time in school history that the Bulldogs have finished with a perfect overall and conference record in the seven CIAA conference game era (since 1980).

The rushing attack for Bowie State ruled the day rushing for 251 total yards on 37 attempts and scoring five of the team’s nine total touchdowns. Bowie State quarterback Ja’rome Johnson rushed for 95 yards on seven attempts scoring three touchdowns.

As far as passing goes for the Bulldogs, Ja’rome Johnson passed for 153 yards on 12/17 passing and two touchdowns. Quarterback Gaston Cooper came off the bench to pass for 104 yards on 5/7 passing and a touchdown.

The Bowie State defense had another dominant performance on defense finishing with 15 tackles for loss and six sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. The Bulldogs had three players finish with at least two tackles for loss and two sacks (Joshua Pryor, Brian Smith and Sharif Coombs).

Sophomore defensive lineman Joshua Pryor finished with five tackles for loss and two sacks. Senior defensive lineman Brian Smith finished with three tackles for loss and two sacks while freshman defensive lineman Sharif Coombs finished with two tackles for loss and two sacks.

The Bulldogs will be in Salem, Virginia next Saturday to play the Fayetteville State Broncos in the CIAA championship game. Last year, the Bulldogs and the Broncos will play each other in the CIAA championship game with the Bulldogs getting a 30-10 win for their first CIAA championship in school history.
