New study reveals there have been more shootings than days this year
  • PublishedAugust 6, 2019

A new study released Sunday has found that there has been more mass shootings in the U.S. so far, than days this year.

According to the nonprofit research group Gun Violence Archive, there have been 255 mass shootings in the U.S. as of Aug. 5, the 217th day of the year. The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as any incident where at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.

These numbers include several high profile mass shooting incidents that occurred over the past week: the shooting in Dayton, Ohio where nine people were killed and 27 injured; the year’s deadliest shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas with 22 people killed and at least 24 injured; and a shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in San Fransisco, with three people killed and 15 injured.

The last time the number of shootings outpaced the number of days in the year was in 2016, which had 382 mass shootings. In comparison, 2017 had 346 mass shootings while 2018 had 340.
