In My Feelings: Event Review
Curated by the brilliant minds of Jamaican don dada Javon “Scrillz” Bryant and Just Solutions Hospitality Management, In My Feelings is a masterclass in bringing together a diverse mix of people, eras of R&B, backgrounds, and creativity—all blended to conjure something close to magic. I pulled up to the latest installment in Brooklyn about a week ago, mainly because I hadn’t been outside since last November. Between locking in for work, observing Ramadan, and committing to a 90-day alcohol fast, life had been real disciplined. So I figured—what better way to re-enter society than supporting my friend’s event?
I made a whole day of it. I had been testing different spots beforehand—sampling drinks, food, and a few extra shenanigans—just to make sure I stepped in feeling right. Mannnnnn, I was groovy as hell. I was so lit before the event that I actually started a fake argument at a Puerto Rican restaurant just to finesse some free food on top of the quesadilla I already bought. Don’t judge me—this is journalism.
By the time I walked into Brooklyn Roots, I felt like Barry White in the ’70s or Kobe Bryant after his fifth championship. The venue itself was spacious and filled up quickly. The upstairs section with the tables? Super clean setup. I grabbed a drink—no clue what it was called—but I can confirm it did exactly what it needed to do.
Even the bathrooms were clutch, which mattered because I had to step away and handle a situation happening in another state. I ended up on the phone for almost an hour, but once I got back out, it was right back to the vibes. I spent the rest of the night singing alongside beautiful women I will, in all likelihood, never see again. That’s neither here nor there—or honestly, anywhere—but it added to the experience.
The DJs were on point all night, running through the right R&B records and turning my slightly intoxicated self into a full-blown singer. At one point, I was convinced I was Maxwell. Not a single note was correct, but the spirit was there.
I barely took any photos or videos—I was actually outside enjoying the moment for once. Overall, 10 out of 10. I didn’t make it back home until 9 a.m. the next morning, and I still managed to get into more adventures after that. No event does that for me, so shoutout to JSM—y’all really did something with this one.
