Mike D Brings Beastie Boys Classics and a New Chapter to a Sold-Out 9:30 Club

The excitement outside Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club started well before the music. An hour before doors opened, Beastie Boys fans were already lining up outside the venue, and by showtime, the sold-out crowd had packed the room in anticipation of Mike D taking the stage.

Mike D wasted little time giving longtime fans what they came for, opening the night with “Hello Brooklyn.” The familiar opening immediately drew a huge response from the crowd and set the energy for the rest of the evening. He followed with “What We Got,” a single from his new album, Thank You. Despite the song only arriving this spring, fans throughout the venue were already singing along.

Throughout the night, Mike D balanced Beastie Boys favorites with music from Thank You, released August 28 through Capitol Records. The project represents a significant new chapter in his career as his first solo full-length album and his first major release since the Beastie Boys’ final album in 2011.

Rather than attempting to recreate the sound and atmosphere of a traditional Beastie Boys concert, Mike D introduced something different. His sons, Skyler and Davis Diamond, joined him onstage after playing an important role in bringing the new record together. Will Graefe and father-and-son duo Eddie and Milo Ruscha rounded out the band. Together, the group transformed the newer songs into bigger live arrangements driven by synthesizers, electronics and guitar.

The combination worked especially well inside the intimate setting of the 9:30 Club.

As expected, the Beastie Boys classics produced some of the night’s loudest reactions, but the newer songs never slowed the show’s momentum. Fans knew the material, sang along and remained engaged throughout the set. Instead of feeling like an artist relying on his past, Mike D showed that there is still room to build something new. Having his sons beside him made that evolution even more noticeable. The performance felt less like a nostalgia tour and more like the beginning of another chapter—one that respects Mike D’s history with the Beastie Boys without being defined entirely by it.

For a sold-out crowd in Washington, D.C., Mike D delivered enough of the past to satisfy longtime fans while proving his latest music can stand comfortably alongside it.
