Devin McCoy: Building a Media Movement in the DMV With The Floaters

Published

on

At just 33 years old, Columbia, Maryland native Devin McCoy has already carved out a unique lane at the intersection of entrepreneurship, media, education, and the creative community. As a video producer, entrepreneur, and media teacher at a Baltimore City high school, McCoy has made it his mission to not only participate in the DMV’s creative ecosystem, but to help build the infrastructure that allows it to thrive.

McCoy is perhaps best known as the founder and operator of Floaters, a platform that has become synonymous with collaboration, creativity, and opportunity throughout the DMV. Over the years, McCoy has worked with more than 1,000 artists across the region, giving emerging talent a platform to be seen, heard, and connected with the broader creative industry.

What makes McCoy’s story particularly compelling is that Floaters was never simply about producing content. It was about creating a culture. At a time when many artists, videographers, photographers, musicians, and other creatives were operating within their own individual circles, McCoy recognized the power of bringing those communities together. Through Floaters, he helped pioneer a model of media collaboration that encouraged artists to work together, share audiences, and create opportunities that may not have existed otherwise.

His influence extends well beyond the camera. McCoy has established himself as someone who understands both sides of the creative process — the importance of having the technical skills to produce quality media and the importance of understanding how that media can help move an artist, brand, or business forward. That combination has allowed him to work with an extraordinary number of artists while continuing to evolve alongside the industry.

Perhaps just as important is McCoy’s work as an educator. As a media teacher at a Baltimore City high school, he is able to take the knowledge and experience he has accumulated through years in the industry and pass it on to the next generation. For McCoy, media isn’t simply a career path; it is a tool for empowerment. Teaching young people how to create, communicate, and tell stories gives them an opportunity to see themselves not only as consumers of media, but as the people capable of creating it.

That educational component adds another layer to McCoy’s entrepreneurial journey. While Floaters has given thousands of artists an opportunity to collaborate and gain exposure, his classroom provides another space where young creatives can begin developing the skills necessary to eventually enter the same industry.

McCoy’s work also speaks to the evolution of the DMV’s creative scene. Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia have always produced influential musicians, artists, filmmakers, and entrepreneurs, but the modern creative economy has created new opportunities for people who understand how to bridge music, video, social media, branding, and community. McCoy has positioned himself directly within that intersection.

His story is ultimately about more than the number of artists he has worked with. Working with more than 1,000 artists is impressive, but the larger accomplishment is the network and culture that has been created along the way. Every collaboration represents another connection within a growing creative ecosystem, and Floaters has helped demonstrate what can happen when those connections are intentionally cultivated.

At 33, Devin McCoy is still building. From producing content and running Floaters to educating Baltimore students, his career reflects a commitment to both creation and community. He has shown that being a successful entrepreneur in media isn’t only about having the next big idea — sometimes it is about creating the space for hundreds or even thousands of other people to realize their own ideas.

For the DMV’s creative community, McCoy represents a generation of entrepreneurs who understand that the future of media is collaborative. Through Floaters, his work as a producer, and his role as an educator, he continues to prove that when creatives are given the opportunity to connect, learn, and build together, an entire community can move forward.
