Fight Back & Win Summit Equips Maryland Democrats for the 2026 General Election

Hundreds of Democratic leaders, elected officials, campaign professionals, community organizers, advocates, and aspiring candidates from across Maryland and the surrounding region gathered last weekend at Maryland Live! Casino & Hotel for the Fight Back & Win Summit and Gala. Widely recognized as one of Maryland’s premier political convenings, the event focused on preparing, connecting, and mobilizing the leaders who will help shape the 2026 General Election.

Throughout the day, attendees participated in immersive workshops, tactical training sessions, and hands-on discussions centered on campaign strategy, fundraising, communications, voter engagement, and grassroots organizing. The summit brought together individuals from every corner of the political landscape with one shared goal to strengthen Democratic efforts and preparing candidates and volunteers to compete up and down the ballot.

The evening concluded with the Fight Back & Win Gala, where Maryland’s political leadership gathered for a night of fellowship and recognition. The gala featured remarks from Maryland Governor Wes Moore and former President Joe Biden, who emphasized the importance of civic engagement, community leadership, and continued organizing ahead of the next election cycle.

As both a journalist and communications professional, the summit offered more than an opportunity to report on the day’s event. It provided valuable insight into the strategy and intentionality behind modern political campaigns. One of the most impactful parts of the experience was hearing directly from elected officials, campaign professionals, and organizers about their personal journeys into public service. Their stories served as a reminder that effective leadership is often rooted in purpose, perseverance, and a commitment to serving others.

During the summit, I attended three breakout sessions that each explored a different aspect of political campaigning. Own the Message: Media Training for Modern Campaigns, led by Nina Smith, focused on crafting authentic messaging and communicating effectively with the media. Political Influence: Using Social Media to Shape the Narrative, presented by Connor Lounsbury, Krishana Avis, Amber Hord, and Amber Shephard, examined how digital platforms influence public opinion and voter engagement. The third session, FUNdraising: Building Campaign Resources, featuring Ashley Wilson, Darien Flowers, Brittany Grimm, Brittani Haywood, and Michelle Ngwafon, highlighted strategies for building sustainable fundraising efforts and cultivating long-term donor relationships.

Many of the topics discussed throughout the day were already familiar to me because of my background in journalism, communications, and social media. However, hearing those same concepts from a political campaign perspective challenged me to think differently about how media is used to influence elections. It shifted my perspective on the level of strategy, planning, and intentional messaging required to execute successful political campaigns.

The sessions reinforced that communication is about much more than creating content. Every interview, social media post, fundraising email, press release, and public appearance serves a purpose in shaping public perception, building trust, mobilizing communities, and advancing a campaign’s message. While many of the communication principles were familiar, seeing them applied within the political arena broadened my understanding of how strategic storytelling influences public engagement.

As Maryland prepares for the 2026 General Election, the Fight Back & Win Summit demonstrated the importance of collaboration, education, and leadership development. Whether attendees were seasoned political professionals or individuals exploring public service for the first time, the event provided practical tools, meaningful conversations, and valuable connections that will continue to shape political organizing across the state.
