Keeping Hopes Alive Is Redefining Mental Health and Healing in Baltimore

In Baltimore, conversations about community often center on crime, poverty, and the challenges families face every day. One organization is working to shift that narrative by creating spaces where healing, mental health, and personal growth become part of everyday life.

For nearly five years, Keeping Hopes Alive has provided behavioral health services to youth, adults, and families throughout Baltimore. Founded by entrepreneur Karahn Alston, the organization was built on a simple belief: surviving life’s challenges should not be the ultimate goal. People deserve the opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive.

A Community-Based Approach to Mental Health

Keeping Hopes Alive offers a wide range of services, including outpatient mental health treatment, psychiatric rehabilitation, individual and family therapy, medication management, mentorship, and life skills programming. The organization takes a holistic approach, recognizing that emotional wellness extends far beyond clinical settings.

For Alston, the mission is deeply personal. Before becoming an entrepreneur and organizational leader, he experienced his own battles with depression, uncertainty, and feeling directionless. Those experiences helped shape the philosophy that continues to guide the organization today.

The message is reflected in Keeping Hopes Alive’s motto: “Your thoughts become your reality.”

Executive Director Ebonee Baker believes changing the conversation around mental health begins with changing how families view therapy.

“We want therapy to become something families see as part of taking care of themselves, not something they only seek when they’ve reached a breaking point,” Baker said. “Healing should not be reserved for a crisis.”

That perspective is especially important in Baltimore, where many young people grow up navigating grief, community violence, economic hardship, family instability, and trauma at an early age.

Keeping Hopes Alive believes treatment alone cannot address every challenge. A therapist can provide support, but young people often need much more than a weekly appointment. They may also need mentors, positive peer relationships, career exposure, recreation, and consistent support systems.

That belief has inspired programs that extend far beyond traditional therapy.

Creating Opportunities Beyond the Therapy Office

The organization’s youth initiatives include therapeutic groups, fitness programs, art activities, financial literacy workshops, digital media experiences, construction training, career development programs, and community outings.

Programs like Summer RISE combine mental health support with educational and recreational experiences designed to help young people build confidence and broaden their understanding of what is possible.

Behind those programs is a team committed to maintaining high standards of care.

Compliance Officer Donna Burke says accountability is essential to building trust within the community.

 

“Families are trusting us during vulnerable moments in their lives,” Burke said. “As we grow, our responsibility is to ensure our policies, clinical processes, and accountability continue growing with us.”

 

Administrative Assistant Jewel Patterson sees another critical part of the process: the first conversation.

Many individuals contact the organization without fully understanding which services they need. Sometimes, they simply know they need help.

Keeping Hopes Alive works to ensure that the first interaction feels welcoming and supportive while removing the stigma that often prevents people from seeking assistance.

The organization has also expanded its impact through community initiatives, including Christmas drives, turkey giveaways, back-to-school programs, youth mentorship opportunities, and family-centered events.

The goal is to build an environment in which emotional wellness is just as important as physical health, education, and economic opportunity.

As Keeping Hopes Alive continues to expand, its leadership remains focused on strengthening services while preserving the community relationships that have defined the organization since its founding.

Baltimore has no shortage of stories about hardship. Keeping Hopes Alive is helping write a different story.

One where families ask for help without shame. One where young people receive support before trauma shapes their future. And one where success is measured not simply by survival, but by healing, hope, and the opportunity to build a better tomorrow.
