For Chris Fatogoma, construction was never part of the original plan. His dream was to become a real estate investor, not a general contractor. After experiencing a challenging year in real estate in 2024, what initially felt like a setback became the foundation for a greater purpose. Encouraged by his wife and business partners, who recognized his leadership after years of managing multimillion-dollar projects for one of the nation’s largest construction firms, the Morgan State University graduate launched C-Cubed Contracting.

Today, the Maryland-based company has expanded its footprint across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, & Pennsylvania. Through a longstanding partnership with Keeping Hopes Alive, he has helped create a hands-on construction training initiative that introduces young people to career opportunities in the skilled trades while simultaneously developing leadership, confidence, and life skills.

The partnership first began through Keeping Hopes Alive’s “How to Become a Man” initiative, where participants learned practical life skills ranging from changing a tire and tying a necktie to setting SMART goals and developing professionalism. That vision has since evolved into the KHA Contractors Program, giving youth real-world exposure to construction through lessons in workplace safety, blueprint reading, teamwork, tool operation, and project execution.

During the program’s inaugural construction workshop, participants worked together to build a wooden table entirely from scratch. Wearing hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests, students learned how to safely operate tools, interpret blueprints, stain and finish wood, and collaborate to complete a project from start to finish. Rather than taking the finished product home, the completed table remains inside Keeping Hopes Alive as a lasting reminder of what the students accomplished together.

For Fatogoma, the experience extends far beyond teaching construction techniques.

Having experienced moments of self-doubt and the pressure to suppress his authentic self early in his corporate construction career, he intentionally creates an environment where young people feel empowered to ask questions, embrace mistakes, lead with confidence, and discover their potential. Throughout each workshop, students naturally begin stepping into leadership roles by mentoring younger participants, solving problems together, and working collectively toward a common goal.

Fatogoma believes exposing youth to careers in construction is especially important because many young people never see examples of professionals who have built successful, purpose-driven careers through the skilled trades. Rather than allowing negative influences to shape their definition of success, he hopes programs like KHA Contractors introduce a different path—one rooted in discipline, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, ownership, and service.

“Each One Teach One” remains the guiding philosophy behind the partnership. By equipping young people with practical trade skills while reinforcing teamwork, communication, accountability, and leadership, the program aims to create opportunities that extend far beyond the workshop and into their futures.

Looking ahead, Fatogoma and the Keeping Hopes Alive team plan to expand the initiative through additional construction workshops, mentorship opportunities, and community events that expose even more youth to careers in the skilled trades. Their long-term vision is to create sustainable pathways that prepare the next generation not only for successful careers but for purposeful lives grounded in leadership, service, and community impact.
