Big KMula Is Preparing His Next Move as He Continues to Represent Memphis

Published

on

Memphis, Tennessee, has long been a breeding ground for hip-hop artists who bring their own perspective, sound, and experiences to the culture. From the city’s underground scene to artists making their mark nationally, Memphis continues to produce talent that reflects its grit, creativity, and undeniable influence on Southern rap. Among the artists continuing to build on that legacy is Big KMula, formerly known as Kourtney Moneyy, who is preparing to introduce listeners to the next chapter of his musical journey.

Hailing from Parkway Village on the east side of Memphis, Big KMula comes from an area with a strong connection to the city’s music scene. The surrounding community has produced and helped shape artists such as Finesse2Tymes, Don Trip, NLE Choppa, and Dee Mula. Growing up in an environment where the realities of the streets intersect with the pursuit of something greater, KMula has a hometown connection that remains an important part of his story.

Memphis has developed a distinctive identity in hip-hop through its production, unapologetic storytelling, and ability to create sounds that influence artists across generations. For those coming out of the city, representing Memphis means contributing to a musical tradition that continues to evolve while finding a way to stand out individually.

Big KMula is working to establish his own place within that tradition. Formerly known as Kourtney Moneyy, he has continued to develop his catalog while building on the experiences and relationships that have shaped his career.

His latest release, “Blue Bottles and Birches,” gives listeners a look at his current musical direction as he prepares to deliver more new music. While the record represents his most recent release, KMula’s catalog extends beyond his latest offering, with previous releases including “Gulag,” “Don Da Da,” and “GOAT Like Me,” a single he released in 2019.

The distinction is important when looking at his musical journey. Rather than treating GOAT Like Me as a new project, the 2019 single serves as an earlier entry in his catalog, reflecting a previous stage of his development as an artist. With “Blue Bottles and Birches” representing his latest release, the focus now shifts toward what he has planned next.

One of the more interesting aspects of KMula’s journey is his relationship with Bill Norton, a longtime friend who has also pursued a career in professional football as a defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams. Beyond their friendship, the two have found a way to connect creatively through music.

Last year, KMula released Men & Black, a joint album produced exclusively by Norton. The project highlighted the creative partnership between two longtime friends whose professional paths have taken them into different industries.

While Norton has established himself on the football field, his work on Men & Black demonstrates another dimension of his interests and talents. For KMula, collaborating with someone who has known him for years brings a personal element to the creative process. Their relationship extends beyond the music industry, creating a foundation for a partnership built on familiarity and shared experiences.

The project also highlights the different ways artists can build their sound and creative networks. Working with one producer throughout an entire album can create a consistent sonic direction, allowing the artist and producer to develop a shared vision across the project.

Now, with more music on the horizon, KMula has an opportunity to build on that foundation and give listeners a clearer picture of where he is headed.

Although he has not yet released his next body of work, the anticipation surrounding his upcoming music creates another opportunity to introduce his sound to a wider audience. For an artist representing Memphis, maintaining that connection to home while continuing to evolve is an important part of the process.

His story is also connected to the broader movement coming out of Parkway Village and the east side of Memphis. The city’s music scene has never relied on a single sound or personality to define it. Instead, its influence has grown through artists bringing their own experiences, perspectives, and approaches to the microphone.

KMula’s journey reflects that ongoing evolution. From his earlier work as Kourtney Moneyy to his 2019 single “GOAT Like Me,” his collaboration with Norton on Men & Black, and his latest release, “Blue Bottles and Birches,” he has continued adding to his catalog while preparing for what comes next.

As he gets ready to release new music, Big KMula is entering another chapter in his career. With his roots firmly planted in Memphis and a history of collaborations that extend beyond the traditional boundaries of the music industry, he has an opportunity to continue developing his sound and expanding his reach.

For listeners discovering him for the first time, “Blue Bottles and Birches” is the place to start. For those who have followed his journey, the next release will offer another look at how the Memphis artist continues to evolve.

One thing remains clear: Big KMula is not finished adding to his story, and his next move is one worth watching.
