2 Woman Shot At Daycare In Springfield

Published

on

In a tense situation on Wednesday, children at a KinderCare daycare center in Springfield, Virginia, were kept safe as two women shielded them during a shooting incident. Authorities credit the potentially life-saving actions of one victim who refused the shooter’s entry.

Despite the danger, the over 70 children present remained unharmed, a relief emphasized by Fairfax County police.

Deputy Chief Brooke Wright expressed gratitude, stating, “We’re relieved no children were harmed today,” during a briefing with reporters.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Julio Pascual Sejas of Arlington, was apprehended following an extensive manhunt after three shots were fired through the daycare’s door in the 8500 block of Bauer Drive. Authorities revealed Sejas attempted contact with a woman with whom he had a prior relationship, but the door remained closed to him.

Describing the incident, Wright noted, “She was on the inside of the door, and she never did open the door.”

Sejas, armed with a pistol, shot the woman and a coworker before fleeing. Fortunately, officers responded swiftly, arriving within two minutes. The area was secured, and the injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Despite the trauma, the children within the daycare remained unaware of the danger, shielded by the quick actions of the adults around them. Wright noted the children showed no distress or awareness of the incident.

Following the incident, police directed parents to the West Springfield District Station on Rolling Road to reunite with their children.
