Head Of Montgomery County Public School Teachers Union States Layoffs ‘Unlikely’
  • PublishedJune 11, 2024

Montgomery County Education Association President Jennifer Martin addressed union members in a video posted on X, calling it a significant step forward due to the collective power and pressure on Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

However, she noted there is still no commitment to prevent furloughs, honor open contracts, or ensure teacher placements do not disrupt their lives.

This message comes amid a $30 million operating budget shortfall for the school system, as informed to families earlier this week, which also stated class sizes would increase by one student next school year. Martin urged county leaders to provide an additional $10 million to prevent overcrowded classrooms and excessive workloads.

An MCPS spokesperson said more information would be provided next week. The Board of Education is expected to finalize the reduced operating budget by Monday, June 11.
