Metro will equip its police officers with body cams by 2023.

The Metro Transit Police Department has received $905,000 from the Department of Justice to establish a body camera program.

“This award allows us to move forward with developing a body-worn camera program comparable to those used by our colleagues in the region,” said Transit Police Chief Michael Anzallo in a Metro statement Tuesday.

The Justice Department must complete its evaluation of Metro’s proposed body camera program policies before officers can begin wearing them.

According to the chief, the program will increase openness and safety at Metro’s police department.

Before its officers begin wearing body cameras, Metro’s police department wants to reach out to the public.
