Where DMV Residents Can Recycle Christmas Trees and Decor? Here’s A List.
As the holiday season comes to a close, many in the DMV area find themselves wondering how to dispose of their Christmas trees responsibly. Proper disposal helps keep neighborhoods clean and supports recycling efforts and environmental sustainability. Here’s a detailed guide for residents in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia:
Washington, D.C:
• Artificial trees: Place out for bulk waste collection (same day as regular trash).
• Live trees: Drop off for composting through Jan. 31 at designated sites, including Fort Totten and Benning Road Transfer Stations.
Maryland:
• Montgomery County: Live trees are collected curbside on recycling days; artificial trees require bulk pickup.
• Prince George’s County: Place live trees curbside by 6 a.m. Mondays in December and January.
• Frederick County & Charles County: Drop trees (ornament-free) at local recycling centers for composting.
Virginia:
• Fairfax & Arlington Counties: Curbside pickup Jan. 6–17; remove decorations. After Jan. 17, trees were handled as yard waste.
• Alexandria: Place natural trees curbside Jan. 2–30 for composting.
• Loudoun & Prince William Counties: Use designated recycling centers or contact waste services for curbside collection.
