Police found five fetuses were discovered at the house of an anti-abortion activist named Lauren Handy in Southeast D.C. on Wednesday.

Officers responded just afternoon to a home on the 400 block of 6th Street SE to investigate a report regarding potential bio-hazard items in the residence, according to a department spokesperson. Officers discovered the fetuses once inside. They were gathered by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Washington, D.C.

The Justice Department announced the indictment of nine anti-abortion protestors on Wednesday, accusing them of entering a reproductive health care facility here in October.

Prosecutors claim Handy pretended to be a woman named “Hazel Jenkins” who wanted an abortion and arranged an appointment on the morning of Oct. 22, 2020, according to the indictment unsealed Wednesday. Handy allegedly approached a clinic receptionist that morning and introduced herself as Hazel Jenkins, who was there for her appointment. According to the indictment, Handy and his co-defendants forced their way into the clinic when the employee opened the door. They allegedly knocked the clinic employee over, injuring her ankle in the process.

Darnel live-streamed video of his co-defendants’ activities after the blockade was formed, according to the Justice Department. The defendants also allegedly broke the FACE Act by injuring, intimidating, and interfering with the clinic’s employees and a patient “while they were providing or obtaining reproductive health services,” according to the indictment.

The defendants face a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines of up to $350,000 if convicted.
