The Power of Executive Strategy and Production in the Music Industry

Howard University and Warner Music Group’s Blavatnik Center for Music Business recently hosted a master class titled “The Power of Executive Strategy and Production in the Music Industry.” The event took place at the School of Business and brought together leading African American figures in the music industry. Speakers Dawan Brown, Saad Amin, MC VERTT, and Banmanrill shared their knowledge on executive leadership, artist growth, and the role of production in launching successful careers. Afterward, we had the chance to chat with the speakers for more details.

Executive Leadership and Brand Strategy

The session opened with a focus on leadership. Dawan Brown, founder of 100 Percent Pure Music, and Saad Amin, founder of 1865 Management, have built their businesses through hard work and partnerships. Brown talked about staying true to his values. He shared, “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. I’m honest and real. That’s why I named my company 100% Pure.” This shows how important it is to be genuine.

Meanwhile, Amin’s brand is rooted in history. He named 1865 Management after the year slavery ended in the U.S. He explained, “I wanted the name to have meaning, especially for the African American community.” By tying his brand to history and culture, Amin reaches a broader audience.

The Role of Production in Music

Next, Grammy-nominated producer MC VERTT talked about the fun and freedom in music. Known for producing hits like Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock,” he stressed how important it is to enjoy the creative process. He said that collaboration between producers and artists is key. His group, “Project X,” inspired by Jersey club music, is made up of people who live and breathe music.

Banmanrill, an artist managed by 1865, added how his uniqueness helps his brand stand out. His style, like his all-black wardrobe, reflects his personality. He explained, “I wear all black because I’m color blind. Everything I do has a reason.” Staying true to who he is has been essential to his success.

Authenticity Is Key to Success

Throughout the master class, one message was clear: authenticity is the most powerful branding tool. While it’s important to enjoy the creative side of music, it’s just as crucial to make smart business choices. Combining both will lead to lasting success. The future of the music industry belongs to those who stay true to themselves and think strategically.
