Summer Walker Launches, Ghetto Earth Records + Signs First Artist

Summer Walker, an R&B singer, and songwriter has decided to venture off into the executive side of the music industry and launch her own label titled Ghetto Earth Records.

The songstress has seen an immense amount of success with her debut album, Over It, which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the US. After the success of her highly charted album, Summer released singles such as “Playing Games” featuring Bryson Tiller and “Come Thru” featuring Usher. Both singles performed exceedingly well on the charts.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Summer walker announced that she launched her own record label, Ghetto Earth Records. The name represents the current state at which the planet is in, which is ghetto, according to Summer. The importance of music artists owning their masters and understanding their contracts has been a widely discussed topic as well.

Many music industry commentators like Joe Budden, utilized his platform to educate artists. In 2017, Budden interviewed Lil Yachty on the Complex show, Everyday Struggle, and stated the following “I want you to be aware of your business. I want you to know if you are in a 360 deal or not.” Joe Budden’s delivery towards the young artist was harsh, however, he stressed the importance of knowing what is in your contract and if your record label having your best interest at heart.

Summer understands that an artist must be given the proper freedom and support to create good music.
“I don’t wanna be controlling over my artist’s music. I want them to be fully involved in everything they put out. I’m just here to support and help them get to where it is they’re trying to go in life.”

The first artist signed to Ghetto Earth is NO1-NOAH, a singer/songwriter, who made an appearance on her Life On Earth – EP, earlier this year. The new signee expressed his excitement about this new journey he is embarking on with Summer:

“I feel like being on Summer’s team, Ghetto Earth Records, is the right home for me to be as creative as possible as an artist. She’s understanding of what a true artist is, as she is one herself. I’m free to create here, and it’s always a great feeling as an artist to be able to make music for a team that gets the sound that you’re trying to create.”

Summer Walker’s new venture is also strongly supported by her label, Nicole Wyskoarko, ECP/Co-Head of A&R of Interscope Records shares her support “Summer brings an unapologetically outspoken and empowering voice to Ghetto Earth and a radically different and much-needed perspective to developing emerging talent such as NO1-NOAH. We can expect new music from NO1-NOAH on Friday, December 11.
