‘Project Prom Dress’ provides complimentary gowns to Montgomery County high school students
On Saturday, high school students eager for prom were all smiles as they exited dressing rooms at a prom dress giveaway in Burtonsville, Maryland.
Area youth had the opportunity to choose the perfect prom dress for free during Montgomery County’s first “Project Prom Dress.”
The first “Project Prom Dress” event was conducted on Saturday at the Marilyn Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville, MD, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There were over 1,700 free gowns offered, as well as shoes, scarves, and jewelry.
As long as they possessed a legitimate high school ID, both local and non-local students were welcome to participate in the contest.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich attended the ceremony as well. He expressed his hope that it will enable more people to attend their big dance.
“For a lot of families, they can’t afford a prom dress. And if you don’t feel you can dress right to go to the prom, a lot of people won’t go.” – Marc Elrich
“Project Prom Dress” organizers have been planning the event since November of last year. They plan to make it an annual event and aim to include menswear next year.
