A toddler was discovered dead inside a rowhome in southwest Baltimore after a mattress fire, according to officials.

Crews were summoned to a fire in the 4700 block of Vancouver Road at 6 p.m. Friday, according to Baltimore Fire Chief Roman Clark. Clark stated that a child between the ages of three and four was discovered deceased at the scene.

A neighbor told 11 News that while she did not see any flames or smoke, she did notice a weird odor in the air. She stated she knew someone who lived in the rowhome and saw their kids playing outside all the time, but she didn’t know them directly.

“It’s sad that it was a child — that it could have been anyone, let alone a youngster who hadn’t even begun to live their life. It’s really awful “stated a neighbor.

The medical examiner’s office will establish the cause of death, according to Clark.

The fire is being investigated.
