on

Not often do you get the chance to witness legends grace the stage, but thanks to the Black Promoters Collective, Washington D.C. was treated to a historic evening celebrating four icons of soul: Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, and Stephanie Mills. These concert was a masterclass in timeless talent, heartfelt tributes, and pure musical magic.

Gladys Knight Opens the Night

The evening began with the incomparable Gladys Knight, the seven-time Grammy Award-winning “Empress of Soul,” whose career spans over six decades. Dressed in a radiant red blazer with a sparkling brooch, Ms. Knight lit up the stage with her signature warmth and grace. Her 25-minute set included classics like “Neither One of Us,” “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” and the iconic “Midnight Train to Georgia,” reminding us why she remains one of the most beloved voices in American music.

Stephanie Mills Brings Soul and Family

Next up was Stephanie Mills, introduced by her son Farad Mills, who also joined her as a background vocalist. Mills, who originated the role of Dorothy in The Wiz on Broadway, stepped out in a dazzling blue sequined dress and delivered powerful renditions of “Something in the Way You Make Me Feel,” “Never Knew Love Like This Before,” and “Home.” Watching her son groove alongside her added a touching layer of intimacy to the performance.

Seamless Transitions and Stellar Production

A special shoutout goes to the set designers—the revolving stage was a stroke of genius, allowing each act to transition smoothly with minimal downtime. Between sets, short video montages celebrated each artist’s career milestones, adding depth and context to the performances. Each queen was backed by a live band and exceptional background singers, some of whom have toured with these legends for over 30 years, while others joined them for the first time that night.

Patti LaBelle Delivers Drama and Divinity

Then came Patti LaBelle, the “Godmother of Soul,” known for her powerhouse vocals and theatrical flair. With a 50-minute set, she gave the audience everything they came for soaring notes, heartfelt dedications, and yes, those famous flying heels. DJ Aktive kept the energy high as Patti changed into a stunning pink dress and tossed flowers into the crowd. Her vocal range was as breathtaking as ever, proving why she’s a class act through and through.

Tributes and Tender Moments

Both Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills took time to honor friends and fellow artists who have passed away. These tributes were deeply moving and added a spiritual layer to the evening, reminding us of the legacy these women carry and the lives they continue to touch.

Chaka Khan Closes with Fire

To close out the night, the one and only Chaka Khan hit the stage. With ten Grammy Awards and a genre-defying catalog that spans funk, soul, jazz, and rock, Chaka brought the house down. Her set was electric, and the two guitarists accompanying her added a raw, edgy vibe that elevated the performance. From “Ain’t Nobody” to “I’m Every Woman,” she reminded us why she’s a musical force unlike any other.

Each of these women has shaped the soundscape of American music, inspiring generations and fueling countless remixes, samples, and tributes. The DMV Daily is honored to have witnessed this unforgettable celebration of Black excellence and musical royalty.
