Baltimore Named ‘Overdose Capital’ Of The United States
Baltimore, labeled the “U.S. overdose capital” by the New York Times, has seen nearly 6,000 overdose deaths in the past six years. Councilman Mark Conway noted that Baltimore was once a leader in addressing the opioid crisis, but the shift from pills to street drugs and fentanyl has had a devastating effect.
Despite city programs, the death rate from 2018 to 2022 was nearly double that of any large city. Conway emphasized the need for long-term, creative solutions and more resources to tackle this unprecedented issue.
Initially praised for its response, Baltimore’s efforts have waned, with fewer ambitious goals and a task force that meets infrequently. Conway called for a thorough review of data, processes, and agencies to improve the city’s approach.
