The Kennedy Center To Close For Two-Year For Renovations
President Donald Trump announced that The Trump–Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will close for two years starting in July to undergo major renovations.
The Kennedy Center, which opened in 1971, is one of the nation’s most prominent cultural institutions, hosting thousands of performances each year across music, theater, dance, and public programming. Trump said the extended shutdown will allow for large-scale upgrades that would be difficult to complete while the venue remains operational. Specific renovation details have not yet been released, but the work is expected to include infrastructure improvements and modernization of performance and audience spaces.
The closure follows recent turmoil at the institution. Multiple performers have canceled scheduled appearances, and several senior leaders have stepped down after Trump added his name to the Kennedy Center and took control of its board.
The developments have sparked debate within the arts community about leadership, governance, and the future direction of the Center. The two-year closure is expected to significantly impact resident companies, touring productions, and the broader Washington, D.C. arts scene.
