The DMV Daily is pleased to endorse Ms. Fatmata Barrie for Montgomery County Council. Fatmata is a proponent of inclusive change in Montgomery County. She sees a large, diverse population of underserved residents that need a voice. With a 20-year law career and an equally long history of being a passionate advocate, she is the best choice to serve on Montgomery County Council and to represent the residents of District 5.

Fatmata wants to bring inclusive change that considers the needs of our small business owners, immigrant population, communities of color, older adults, early-career adults, and growing families in conversations about housing and economic development. I want to fight to ensure community outreach and employment opportunities that allow current residents to remain comfortably in their homes and businesses.

Some of the pertinent issues within Montgomery County she will be fighting for is economic development, educational equity, healthcare equity, housing equity, immigration rights & protections, safe communities, support for seniors equal access to Transportation

“Our community is full of rich ethnic cultures. Many of our local business owners are from black and people of color populations who settled in the County and invested in business enterprises and have a huge stake in the direction of economic development policy into the future. Small businesses, entrepreneurs, and industrial complexes create a vibrant community. The food and music alone draw a colorful nightlife that attracts people to the area! This activity attracts developers and investors interested in capitalizing on these opportunities. However, currently, coordination with local businesses and neighborhoods is lacking or nonexistent. said Fatmata Barrie.

Barrie was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa. At the age of 11, she came to the U.S. with her parents. Her family moved to South Florida when she was 14, spending the formative years of her youth in the sunshine state. She went on to graduated from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and then the University of Florida with a law degree. Based on lived experiences as an immigrant family, Fatmata’s parents raised her and her siblings to be civic-minded and deeply involved in their community. Those early lessons stayed with her and became a penchant that fueled her need to drive meaningful change. Her passion is what brought her to the D.C. area, where she fell in love and settled down.

If you are interested in learning more about Fatmata’s campaign or would like to make a donation, please visit https://www.fatmatabarrie.com/.  All donations given by Montgomery County Residents will qualify for matching funds. (Ex. If you donate $20, the county will also donate $20. Non-residents of Montgomery County can donate up to $250.
