Chemical Odor Forces Evacuation of Waldorf Golden Corral, Authorities Investigating
WALDORF, Md. — A sudden chemical odor forced the evacuation of a Golden Corral restaurant along Crain Highway on Saturday evening, Jan. 17, after customers and staff began coughing and experiencing breathing difficulties inside the dining room. Around 6:30 p.m., diners noticed a white, mist-like vapor spreading through the restaurant. Within moments, people reported throat irritation and choking sensations. Employees quickly called 911 and moved patrons outside as the odor intensified.
Charles County fire and rescue crews arrived and cleared the building as a precaution. Emergency medical personnel evaluated at least 13 people who reported respiratory discomfort. None required hospitalization, and all received care at the scene. Hazardous materials teams entered the restaurant to test the air and search for the source of the odor. Crews found no abnormal chemical readings but ventilated the building to remove lingering irritants. Firefighters worked room by room to restore safe air quality.
Investigators believe someone may have discharged pepper spray or mace inside the restaurant. These sprays can quickly overwhelm enclosed spaces, causing immediate irritation to the eyes, throat, and lungs. Witness accounts of the visible mist and rapid onset of symptoms match those effects. The Charles County Health Department received notification, and police officers assisted with crowd control while crews worked. After completing ventilation and confirming normal air levels, officials cleared the scene.
The restaurant closed for the remainder of the evening as authorities continued investigating whether the incident occurred accidentally or intentionally. No arrests have been made, and officials have not released suspect information.
